Wine tasting

On Saturday 9 March 2019 the ‘Friends of Silsoe Church’ had organised a tutored wine tasting. The tasting was led by Emma Briffett, the tasting & Events Coordinator at the Wine Society in Stevenage. This time, ticket numbers had been severely limited so that all guests could benefit from Emma’s presentation.

The theme for this year’s tasting was “New Year, New World, New Wines” and Emma had chosen 3 white wines and 3 red wines from Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Argentina, South Africa and USA to reflect the wide range of different wines available.  Emma and husband Ben welcomed guests as they arrived with a generous glass of chardonnay with strict instructions not to drink it all as this was the first tasting.

Emma then talked guests through the 3 white wines and then had a short break when she answered a range of questions from the different tables before going onto the reds. Finally, from a show of hands it was clear that the favourite wine of the night was the Australian Benchmark Shiraz.

Following the tasting a buffet supper of ham, cheddar, stilton, pork pie and falafel, bread rolls and pickle was served. During supper guests could buy a glass of each of the wines from the tasting. The overall reaction from guests that it was an enjoyable and informative evening owing much to the knowledge and presentation of Emma.
