Bell ringers annual outing

Bell ringers annual outing

Ringers outside St Christopher at Willingate

The annual outing for the Silsoe bell ringers took place on Saturday 30th September. This year the Churches were villages in Essex centred around High Ongar. Once again Christopher Catlin had organised an outing that offered a range of ringing opportunities from ground floor in the Church porch to a ringing chamber accessed via a steep ladder! Unfortunately, one of the six Churches had forgotten that we had booked to come and was not open, possibly just as well as there was a very active bees nest in the belfry with one of the ringers being stung.

Lunch had been arranged at the Black Bull in Margaretting, a recommendation from a local, and it proved an excellent choice offering a range of options all freshly prepared from local produce. Portions were very generous and it transpired later that many of the ringers felt sufficiently satisfied to miss their evening meal.

Four Churches were visited in the afternoon and following their lunch the ringers had no excuse for not taking a full part in ringing at all of the Churches. Again, it was another very enjoyable day with the opportunity to both visit and ring at a range of most interesting Churches. Thanks to Christopher for his excellent organisation and to all those who came to support the day. If anyone would like to learn to ring the bells at St James Church then please either contact Barbara Fraser on 01525 861709or just come along to our practice night at the Church, 8-9pm on Monday evenings, everyone very welcome.
